It is one of the oldest and most naturally beautiful cities in India and has a recorded history dating back to the 3rd century BC. Located in the beautiful Kashmir Valley, through which the radiant Jhelum River flows, Srinagar is surrounded in the north by the Hokersar wetlands - one of richest wetlands in terms of fauna and flora in the country, and is home to migratory birds from Siberia. Srinagar is also famous for its many lakes, the best known of which is the Dal Lake, home to houseboats, shikaras (canoe like skiffs), and floating markets. The town is also very well known for its numerous gardens, most of which were made many centuries ago. There are also many edifices of religious importance to be found in the city. Srinagar is in the land that truly embodies nature’s harmony between earth, sky, water, mountains, trees, and flowers, and is a destination that must be visited at least once in a lifetime.
